2019 Durell Vineyard Origin Chardonnay

2019 Durell Vineyard Origin Chardonnay

Chardonnay is perfectly suited for the rolling hillsides and stony river bottom flats of our beautiful estate vineyard, Durell, and the unoaked Origin is the naked, pure expression of the varietal grown in this special site. Rocky, volcanic soils radiate warmth to the vines throughout the day, while cooling fog and coastal breezes contribute to the remarkable diversity of this vineyard in the heart of Sonoma. We ferment this wine in concrete eggs, amphoras, and stainless-steel barrels to showcase the beauty of the fruit, without the effects of oak. Bright and balanced, the palate opens with an energetic pop of acidity, followed by richness and texture from the sur lie aging process.

The 2019 vintage boasts aromas of jasmine, apple blossom, and moonflower, while kumquat, lychee, and Asian pear on the palate move to a finish that demands another sip.

More Information
The 2019 vintage made a memorable entrance, with much-needed rainfall, allowing the earth to recover and heal from previous dry years. The vines awoke from their winter slumber and transitioned into a cool spring, giving us the chance to enjoy a mild and uneventful budding season. As fruit matured, the temperate conditions allowed the flowering to set at an even pace as we continued to experience cool temperatures throughout the season. The grapes had a nice, slow development into veraison, intensifying flavors and giving us plenty of nuance to work with in the cellar. Our winemaking team perfectly captured the distinct characteristics of the 2019 vintage, allowing each of our estate vineyards to express each of their unique traits in the bottle. Because of the complexity and high yields of this vintage, we are excited for the tremendous quality and age-ability that it promises. While the 2018 and 2019 vintages had similar bounties and quality, the growing seasons couldn’t have been more different—the true blessing and mystique of Mother Nature.
