2017 Casteñada White Image

2017 Casteñada White

Our Casteñada White Blend comes from the 52 acre Parmelee Hill Vineyard. Located a stone’s throw from our Estate Durell Vineyard, Parmelee was planted by Steve Hill, who was also the founding farmer of Durell. Retreating morning fog leads into warm mid-day temperatures followed by cool, whipping wind in the afternoon. This type of climate results in low-yielding vines producing fruit with intense flavor. Composed of 40% Grenache Blanc, 32% Roussanne, 16% Marsanne, and 12% Viognier, these grapes are co-fermented and aged in a mix of concrete amphora, stainless steel drums and a single French oak barrel. Pleasing and fun, this wine hits floral aromatic high notes with ideal viscosity and bright acidity.

Vintage
2017 was a vintage to remember. In the winter months, we saw record rainfall which helped our soils thoroughly saturate and cleared out salts that built up during the dry periods. Temperatures were a bit cooler as we went through flowering which allowed for a good "set", until we had a ripple of heat waves at the end of August into early September. With spikes above 100 F, we made the decision to harvest our Pinot Noir prior to the heat and hydrate the plants to further their development. While compressed into smaller picking windows, the grapes looked great coming into the winery and we had nice ferments to follow. Thankfully, the 2017 fruit was in barrel by the time the firestorm erupted in the wine country. Our vineyards were threatened by two fires but ultimately were saved by the brave and exhausting work of first responders. We are forever grateful for those that put themselves in harm’s way to help us save our livelihood and we will surely never forget the pain and devastation caused by these fires. The 2017 vintage is dedicated to the heroes who saved the little slice of heaven we call home and in memory of those who were lost.
