2016 Sonoma Mountain One Sky Chardonnay

92pts from Wine Spectator
92pts from Blue Lifestyle

Our One Sky Chardonnay continues to amaze us with the concentration of fruit juxtaposed with beautiful freshness and opulent aromatics. Sonoma Mountain is an ideal growing area for Chardonnay with warm sunny afternoons and cool pockets of fog hugging the mountainsides through the morning hours. The grapes ripen and develop with a steadiness that we love to watch. The 2016 has an orange blossom nose with bright minerality and toasted oak. The palate is full of juicy, ripe tropical fruit and rolls into a finish that never seems to end. Perfectly balanced with acid and body, this wine shows the remarkable potential of Sonoma Mountain.

Vineyard
Sonoma Mountain is renowned for its hillside terrain, little knolls and foggy valleys. This diversity creates unique microclimates and soil types. The grapes for this “Old Wente” selection Chardonnay were grown on an eastern facing slope at 900’ to 1,100’ elevation. The soil is red iron volcanic over calcareous strata. Early morning sun plus protection from heat and wind provide a layered, multidimensional wine.
Vintage
2016 was a relatively smooth year that unfolded at a steady pace and with mild temperatures. While we didn’t have many exceptionally hot days, it was one of the earlier harvests on our record. Flowering and fruit set beautifully and yields were above normal, which was a nice change from previous years. We harvested our first grapes in mid-August, and had picked about 25% of our Pinot Noir and then a sudden cool spell arrived. This allowed cooler climate vineyards that had yet to be harvested to remain on the vine longer and develop deep and expressive flavors. The berries were smaller and heartier than normal which resulted in great depth of color and structure. We are extremely excited by the 2016’s - they are something special! Pretty, expressive, and pleasurable.
