2016 Gap's Crown Vineyard Pinot Noir

2016 Gap's Crown Vineyard Pinot Noir

The influence of fog and wind on the iconic Gap’s Crown vineyard creates a site that produces world-class Pinot Noir with perfect balance of blue fruits and mouthwatering acidity.  The nose of the 2016 Pinot Noir hints at its cooler origin, evoking fresh blackberry galette with undertones of hibiscus and red licorice. On the palate, the texture is inviting and bright, yet structured with silky tannins creating a wine that is built to age well.  Our mix of Heritage and Dijon clones lend an elaborate blend to the wine, showing a blue/black fruit core with pipe tobacco spiciness. As evidenced by the beautiful balance and strength of this opulent Pinot, the Gap's Crown Vineyard shows how well Pinot Noir performs in some of these cooler areas of our county.

Vineyard
Gap’s Crown Vineyard is on the western slope of Sonoma Mountain at an elevation of 300′ to 800′. The well-drained soil is predominately loam and clay loam. Gap’s Crown is situated in an area of Sonoma County known as the Petaluma Gap, a not-yet-confirmed AVA. This area enjoys the cooling effects of both wind and fog plus a spectacularly sweeping western exposure. This wine is made up of four clones – Swan, 828, 115, and a low-yielding Rochioli selection of the Pommard clone. Gap’s Crown has become one of the most iconic vineyards in the Sonoma Coast, consistently producing Pinot Noir and Chardonnays of distinction.
Vintage
2016 was a relatively smooth year that unfolded at a steady pace and with mild temperatures. While we didn’t have many exceptionally hot days, it was one of the earlier harvests on our record. Flowering and fruit set beautifully and yields were above normal, which was a nice change from previous years. We harvested our first grapes in mid-August, and had picked about 25% of our Pinot Noir and then a sudden cool spell arrived. This allowed cooler climate vineyards that had yet to be harvested to remain on the vine longer and develop deep and expressive flavors. The berries were smaller and heartier than normal which resulted in great depth of color and structure. We are extremely excited by the 2016s - they are something special! Pretty, expressive, and pleasurable.
