2016 Cuvée Eva Marie Pinot Noir Image

2016 Cuvée Eva Marie Pinot Noir

The 2016 Cuvée Eva Marie Pinot Noir holds such a special place in our hearts.  After fermenting and aging all of the Pinot Noir blocks from our One Sky vineyard separately, we select the finest barrels from the lots to create a blend that best exemplifies the site and vintage.  In 2016, we were blessed with a growing season that ended long and cool, allowing us to pick the fruit at optimal ripeness while retaining natural acidity.  This transformed into a wine that shows wonderful spice with dark raspberry, kirsch, and potpourri.  The palate has silky and round tannins with vanilla cinnamon bark and sandalwood.  A truly refined and elegant Pinot.

High atop Sonoma Mountain sits One Sky Vineyard, a new jewel in the crown for Three Sticks. Growing grapes at over 1,400 feet can be challenging but the rewards have proven worth it. Deeply rich and flavorful Pinot Noir develops in this cool, north-facing slope. With fog from the Pacific Ocean (to the west) and the San Francisco Bay (to the South), grapes have ample time to develop slowly and intensely through the growing season. Soils are Goulding Cobbly Clay Loam which provide excellent drainage and a bit of power necessary in this steep and undulating terrain. We have a mix of heritage and Dijon clones planted to take advantage of both the site’s cool climate and potential for nuanced and expansive wines.
2016 was a relatively smooth year that unfolded at a steady pace and with mild temperatures. While we didn’t have many exceptionally hot days, it was one of the earlier harvests on our record. Flowering and fruit set beautifully and yields were above normal, which was a nice change from previous years. We harvested our first grapes in mid-August, and had picked about 25% of our Pinot Noir and then a sudden cool spell arrived. This allowed cooler climate vineyards that had yet to be harvested to remain on the vine longer and develop deep and expressive flavors. The berries were smaller and heartier than normal which resulted in great depth of color and structure. We are extremely excited by the 2016s - they are something special! Pretty, expressive, and pleasurable.
