2016 Alana Vineyard Chardonnay

2016 Alana Vineyard Chardonnay

2016 is the first vintage where we decided to make a vineyard designate from our Alana Vineyard Chardonnay.  Set up in the hills between the town of Graton and Occidental in the Green Valley of the Russian River Valley,  the Alana Chardonnay is made from heritage Wente clone that produces tiny clusters with intense concentration.  We are over the moon happy with the quality this vineyard puts out.  The wine has wonderful notes of lemon meringue, grilled pineapple and fresh-baked bread.  The palate sings with rich toffee and vanilla bean notes while carrying a beautiful acidity that keeps the finish fresh and lingering.

Vineyard
One of the newest additions to our Estate Vineyards, Alana is nestled amongst the old redwoods of Sebastopol. This 5-acre vineyard sits on a ridge in Green Valley, a few hundred feet above sea level with the Pacific Ocean just 20 miles west. The site maintains a near-perfect climate for grape growing. Winding valleys keep the fog in late and temperatures low, while the sun peeks through in the afternoon to warm up the vines before the cool evenings begin again. Alana Vineyard is small but mighty and produces grapes of distinction.
Vintage
2016 was a relatively smooth year that unfolded at a steady pace and with mild temperatures. While we didn’t have many exceptionally hot days, it was one of the earlier harvests on our record. Flowering and fruit set beautifully and yields were above normal, which was a nice change from previous years. We harvested our first grapes in mid-August, and had picked about 25% of our Pinot Noir and then a sudden cool spell arrived. This allowed cooler climate vineyards that had yet to be harvested to remain on the vine longer and develop deep and expressive flavors. The berries were smaller and heartier than normal which resulted in great depth of color and structure. We are extremely excited by the 2016s - they are something special! Pretty, expressive, and pleasurable.
